Five Fun Facts on ME

Well, I've been tagged twice with this one. First by The Cubicle Reverend (whom I believe started it) and now by the shy and cuddly Pastor David Petersen (if only he'd come out of his shell).

List Five Facts About Self
O.K. Petersen tagged me and I noticed that four of his five were things he dislikes. I'm going to do four things I like and one thing I dislike.

  1. One of my life goals is to visit Egypt. I have always been fascinated by the history, culture, etc. And I'm intrigued by the Coptic Church and their current leader, Pope Shenouda.

  2. Favorite beer is, without question, Guiness Stout. But I can't stand it from a bottle. Has to come from the draft. I also like Yuengling Ale, Corona, and Goose Island Honker's Ale. So if you were wondering what to get me for Christmas. . . .

  3. My favorite local band is Good Brother Earl. I go see them live every chance I get. They are releasing a new CD early 2006.

  4. Pop CD I literally cannot stop listening to right now is Extraordinary Machine by Fiona Apple.

  5. I generally don't like cooked vegetables. If I can't eat it raw, maybe with a little dressing or seasoning, I'll likely pass. Exception: Corn on the cob. Is corn a vegetable or a grain? I've never understood that.

I heard Fiona Apple on the Today show yesterday. What would you recommend to get me started? The album you mention above?

Anything else?

I do agree about Guiness Stout, it has to be a draft. I went to my neighborhood tavern once and ordered one and as he was filling the glass as a head would form he'd poor it out. I almost jumped over the bar to make him stop. Though I have recently discovered Belgian Ales and think I actually prefer them over Guiness (St. Patrick will never forgive me).

And what is Good Brother Earl like? You have me intrigued. And here's a good local band from my neck of the woods

I am not much of a Fiona Apple fan, but have to admit I am liking her new album.

You impress me Rev, you have very good tastes.

Thanks. It sounds like you have interesting tastes in books, music, and beer as well.

Good Brother Earl kind of reminds me of Dave Matthews Band, Counting Crows, and Coldplay. They are eclectic. Sometimes a bit folk rock, sometimes more blues, sometimes a little pop, that sort of thing. I think you can listen to 3 or 4 of their songs on their website:

www.goodbrotherearl.com. I will definitely check out the band you recommend.

Chaz,
On Fiona Apple. I'd recommend getting her new album: Extraordinary Machine. She has two others which I like as well. But she is pretty unique. Her first two albums have some very cool songs, Shadowboxer and Criminal, for instance. But she has a lot of anger. This latest album is more whimsical, which I like. Her lyrics are sometimes fun, sometimes angry. She blends styles, goes from sounding like a showtune to lounge blues in the same song. Her piano is always surprising. Her latest album even has a waltze. Not everyone like her, but I find that I never get tired of listening. For me, her music grows on a person. The first time, one or two songs are catchy. The fifth or sixth time, I am enamored with nearly every song. The tenth to the 100th time, I'm obsessed.
